Marty Supreme Hits

The long awaited epic sports comedy-drama film “Marty Supreme,” starring TImothee Chalemet and directed by Josh Safdie hit theaters on Christmas 2025 to an astounding $875,000 in its opening weekend. The film follows table-tennis star Marty Mauser through his many mishaps and escapades as he pursues his dream of becoming the table tennis world champion and beating Koto Endo, the current reigning champion. The film had an incredibly successful advertising campaign. For starters, the viral “Marty” jacket worn by celebrities from Bill Nye (yes, the science guy) to Tom Brady. The jacket, released by A24 as a collectible, is now retailing for over $1,000 on StockX. Beyond the film’s merchandise, A24 also released a “short film” in which Chalamet suggests increasingly bizarre marketing strategies for the film, some of which actually came true (Marty Supreme blimp anyone?). The craziest perhaps, is the fact that Chalamet became the first person to stand atop the famous Las Vegas sphere (colored Marty Supreme orange) in A24’s biggest marketing stunt yet. In terms of the positives, the film is beautifully shot by veteran cinematographer Darius Khondji on 35mm film stock, giving it a wonderful coloring and authentic 1950’s feel. The production was also extremely consistent with the time period. In contrast, the soundtrack was the complete opposite—composed by Daniel Lopatin, the soundtrack featured 80s synth from the likes of New Order and Public Image Ltd. As well as original synth from Lopatin himself. Despite the clash, the music worked to emphasize Marty’s desire for success. Now for the negatives. For starters, the film’s plot dragged on—this was the kind of movie that you watch once and never again. In the simplest terms possible, the film was a “mega bummer.” The plot is merely a cacophony of mishaps that befall Marty, blow after blow. Furthermore, Marty is not a particularly likable character. This almost works in the film’s favor, as the audience almost roots for the adversity that happens upon Marty, but ultimately it just makes for a pointless viewing experience: A terrible person having terrible things happen to him. This is not to say that “Marty Supreme” is a is not worth watching, its possibly the best movie currently out. I encourage you all to go and see it, to watch it at least once, which is enough for the rest of your life.
