ICE Walkout: Students March to City Hall

On Friday, Jan. 30th, students at Dana Hills planned and participated in the nationwide walkout related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE. An Instagram account with the username @ dhhs_iceout26 helped organize the movement at the school, while nearby campuses such as Capistrano Valley, Aliso Niguel, and San Clemente coordinated similar efforts through their own accounts. The goal of the walkout was to “bring attention to a specific injustice,” according to the Instagram page, referring to concerns surrounding ICE policies and enforcement. The coordinators planned for the walkout to begin at 11:00 a.m., right after Flex Time. Teachers and staff were aware of the plan ahead of time. Students who participated were allowed the opportunity to make up missed classwork. Administrators also took steps to ensure supervision during the event. Ryan Burris, Chief Communications Officer for the district, stated that “administrators and designated staff will supervise and monitor students throughout the duration of the walkout on campus.” Police officers were also present near campus to help manage safety as students exited the school grounds, while staff members remained on campus to monitor the situation.
