Prop 50 Changes the Map

By Sofia Martinez

Trump Administration’s attempt to rig the midterm elections by racially redistricting the voting maps to favor the republican party. This month after Prop 50 passed, a three- judge panel issued a ruling blocking the map Texas Governor Gregg Abbott was proposing, the map was blocked due to racial profiling by placing the district boundaries in predominantly white communities to pick up the remaining congressional seats he’d need to control the House. It is usually thought to be conniv- ing and against the law to attempt to rig an election but I for one believe it to be pathetic and embarrassing to cheat just to finish carrying out your political agenda. Texas was attempting to Gerrymander the midterm elections, gerry- mandering is not new to the realm of politics and is usu- ally used for political gain when a district redraws maps to favor a specific political party. By having Californians vote on whether they wanted to redistrict the maps, and acquiring the permission to have the voting maps redrawn, Prop 50 ended up passing by a landslide with a “64.42% yes and 35.58% no” (California Proposition 50, Use of Legislative Congressional Redistricting Map Amendment (2025). Prop 50 is such a threat to the Administration be- cause by Prop 50 passing, it allows California the chance to pick up more seats than Texas in the House and ruin the Republican majority in a fully legal way. In return it has caused Republicans to attempt to sue in return with the claim of proposition 50 being unconstitutional as they con- tinue the Republican vs. Democrat battle for the House, the Republican Party doesn’t seem to be admitting fault very well . What Texas and the administration proposed was an attempt to choose who their voters were instead of the democratic way of having the people choose their representatives. This is significant because it was an at- tempt to deceive the election to benefit only themselves for control over the house . So far a federal judge has blocked Texas and their attempt to redistrict their maps for illegal racial gerrymandering but California is going strong in the plan to redistrict the voting maps. After the passing of prop 50 governor Gavin Newsom, with the midterm elections just a year away, is urging other democratic states like Virginia, Maryland, Colorado, and Illinois to follow in the steps of California as they stand up to the deceiving and atrocious actions of this Administration. He encourages them to propose their own versions of Prop 50 and plan to redistrict their maps and give themselves a chance at stop- ping or at least slowing down the Administration in their completion of Project 2025. In theory the Republicans can redistrict their voting maps in Republican states as well by voting on it but they’d have to agree to do so legally and not racially motivated as they were attempting to do in the beginning. Whether the Prop 50 will be followed through with or not, after getting backlash when the Texas court denied Gregg Abbott, both states had a choice to propose each map legally and only one decided to do so. I believe California should be allowed to follow through regardless.
