On September 26th, around the beginning of fourth period, there was a peculiarly strong smell that worsened by the second. The abnormal smell was later revealed to be a skunk that was found in the Arts hallway, shocking many students nearby. All of the students in the Arts hallway had to stay outside or in the mall due to the pungent smell. Ms. Detrinidad, the art teacher, says the skunk was “found either in second period or Flextime, still early in morning.” Ms. Detrinidad says she does not know who called animal control directly, but she thinks “[she] was the one that called the office to let them know there was a living skunk in the art hall.” She recalls that animal control came to the ceramics room around an hour after she called the front office to notify them, and they came to extract the skunk which “was in the kiln area.” The skunk when found, was where the big ovens are in the ceramics room. She recalls the skunk being “between the fence and one of the racks.” The smell, however, did not just stay in the Ceramics room, but it eventually made its way towards the Math hallway. Due to the poor ventilation in some of the classrooms, the stench lingered, and the Math students had to evacuate their classes towards the baseball fields for part of the period. Many math teachers let their students stay outside for the rest of the duration of the period to let their rooms freshen up while they finished their work due to the overwhelming smell. By the end of the day, the odor had mostly dispersed, and classes returned to normal, though a faint trace of the skunk’s scent still lingered in the halls. This unexpected incident definitely became one of the most talked-about moments of the week, and some students still claim they can smell the skunk in the Math hall even now.
