The Conjuring Last Rites is the fourth movie to complete The Conjuring series starring Ed and Lorraine but overall it is the ninth movie included in the franchise. The paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson as Ed and Vera Farmiga as Lorraine, was just like the other four Conjuring movies. The movies in the past have been based on true events. This movie is based on a family living in Pennsylvania who had recently moved into a house while experiencing abnormal and paranormal behavior. Continuing activity all around the house causes them to turn to none other than the main characters Ed and Lorraine who work with paranormal activity and entities, for help with their haunted house. Soon after release, the movie caught a lot of attention after circulating social media posts went around showing people using holy water before they went in to see the movie, which set high expectations for a lot of the public. The movie itself was not original and was predictable as it didn’t have an individual plot. Ed and Lorraine are nearing retirement but are called back to assist the family being haunted which ends up tying them back to their original case from the first movie. Most people attending these types of horror movies are expecting suspense, surprise, and overall excitement, but all the “jump scares” and actions in this movie provided were unsurprising and unsuspenseful, leaving people laughing and amused rather than scared or in shock. At one point, a nine foot tall Anabelle doll was featured, leaving the audience confused. The movie disappointed, turning it into a humorous experience rather than horrifying. Overall, the new Conjuring movie was not suspenseful, predictable, not scary and didn’t meet the expectations of most of the audience and older fans of the franchise. It disappointed long-time fans with the repetition of the plot and little to no uniqueness and creativity.
