“Belly, cacao is the bean, it’s what chocolate is made of,” said by the character Jeremiah Fisher in the hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty. He goes on to explain his knowledge of this two-tiered, dark chocolate, mirror-glazed, and raspberry coulis cake, saying, “The whole flavor profile depends on the bitterness of the dark chocolate and the sweet tartness of the raspberry.” The show is now on its third and final season, but many fans are starting to get upset about how slow this season is progressing. There are eleven episodes, each about an hour long, but about half of them (fans are saying) are more of “filler” episodes. The Summer I Turned Pretty is based in the New England town called Cousins, where the Fisher family own a beach house. It is described as a haven for both the Fisher family and the Conklin family. These two families are connected through the two moms, Susannah Fisher and Laurel Conklin, who are best friends. They have brought their children to said beach house since they were little, creating romantic tropes between Conrad and Belly, and strong, growing friendships between all. The main character Isabel “Belly” Conklin describes her life when being involved with the beach house every summer: “My whole life was measured in summers. Like I don’t really begin living until June, until I’m at that beach, in that house.” This show is profiled by the poll of “Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah,” the two Fisher brothers who are fighting for Belly Conklin’s love. But there is a problem arising of how the show is specifically making Conrad the better option. In earlier seasons, the dispute between which brother was the better option for Belly was pretty split, with fair arguments for both. Now, most Jeremiah fans have been starting to turn on him. They seem to have destroyed his character and made him look like a completely different person from the beginning seasons. Many are saying they deliberately ruined his character to end with Belly being in love with Conrad. They say the creators of the show want to make Jeremiah look bad so people do switch to Conrad’s side, and everyone is happy with the ending. But many are not happy with the fact that they drove Jeremiah’s character to the ground. Personally, I like the show and was never Team Jeremiah, but after watching all seasons, I can see how they did ruin his character. An interesting fact about this show is that it was originally a book. The three seasons represent all three books that the show is based off of. The show has many other love tropes inside of it which are enjoyable to pay attention to. It characterizes many emotions like young love, nostalgia, grief, anxiety, depression, and many more. If you enjoy a teenage show with summer love, I would recommend The Summer I Turned Pretty, because even though it’s slow at times, the plot twists, relationships, and the family they have created with each other make it worth it to watch.
