Mrs. Reid is a big part of Dana Hills High School culture. You used to be able to always find her in her old science classroom where she taught classes for twenty years, but now, as the new assistant principal, you can find her doing what she says she has spent the most time doing so far as the assistant principal at Dana Hills High School—“kicking kids out of the boys’ bathroom” as well as “making sure kids don’t leave when they aren’t supposed to at lunch.” The process she has taken to become the new assistant principal has been three years of Professional Learning Community (PLC) coaching, and she also did a year of being a student teacher under the old assistant principal at the time, Mr. Bajorek, which is why “you saw me hanging with Bajorek all of the time.” Reid jokingly states that her new role is “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get,” and the “learning curve is so steep,” showing that there is still room to create a fun atmosphere while still keeping a professional work environment. Reid also says that she “wants school to remain a fun place. She doesn’t want to make it miserable for students, but hopes to enforce rules while still creating a positive and enjoyable environment.” Reid’s favorite part of being an assistant principal is “working with all of the teachers and admin team,” and she is learning a lot day by day. She also really enjoys “being able to go out and about and go into classrooms to see what kids are doing.” She finds the best part of her job is being able to talk and build relationships with students on campus. Reid rates the job she has been doing so far a “solid 6–7” and feels she is “learning quickly, but there is still a lot to learn.” Congratulations to Mrs. Reid on the amazing accomplishment of becoming the assistant principal.
