New Phone, Who Dis: Is the iPhone 17 Worth It?

By Anson Skinner

The iPhone 17 released to the public on the 19 of September at a staggering 829 dollars for the entry model. Though many of the model’s features are improved from the iPhone 16 including its new 120Hz refresh rate, an upgraded camera and additional storage, some feel that at the current price point it may not be a worthwhile purchase. These new features are more than welcome, however these changes don’t change the experience for the average user. High resolution sensors and ultra high refresh rates are steps forward from a technological standpoint; however, for most of the use cases of an iPhone—messages, phone calls, scrolling on social media—a high refresh rate doesn’t matter. Beyond the refresh rate and storage, many of the true upgrades to this model are locked behind Pro Max versions, telephoto and better cooling, which is 300 more dollars than the already expensive base model. Many of the models of the iPhone, especially 16 or 15, may be a more worthy choice for purchase due to them having very similar performance to the 17 while being a little cheaper and over time dropping in price further as more people get their hands on an iPhone 17. Some users of the new iPhone model on social media have shown that the device is very prone to scuffing, having visible scrapes where paint and pieces of metal fly off of the model especially around the edges. In the end the iPhone 17 fails to meet the expectation of being a revolutionary step for iPhone models, but it does refine on what already made the iPhone great with an extended battery life and sleek design. I feel however this refinement is not worth the 800 dollar asking price for most consumers.
