At 230 million views, Red Notice was the most-watched film in Netflix history until June 20, 2025, when KPop Demon Hunters was released, amassing over 314 million views within its first 91 days on the streaming platform. The animated film follows three female K-pop stars of the band HUNTR/X located in South Korea. The group is determined to prevent their dedicated fans from falling prey to the demon king, Gwi-Ma, and his army. When a rival band of demons, the Saja Boys, rapidly gain popularity, HUNTR/X is forced to settle their differences in order to save the world. In only an hour and 36 minutes, HUNTR/X shows viewers what it truly means to respect, accept, trust, and love not only others, but also ourselves. Although it was targeted towards teens and young adults, the movie gained traction amongst all age groups. Easily recognizable characters, catchy tunes, hilarious facials, and a vibrant color palette all contributed to its quick rise to popularity. Audiences were entranced by the film’s visuals, while older audiences noticed and appreciated the relatable themes the movie explores. On August 23rd, a sing-along version of the film hit theaters across the world. More than 1,000 screenings were sold out for KPop Demon Hunters’s limited theatrical release. Globally, enthusiastic fans united in theaters to share their love and bond with the community the movie procured. Some complain the plot is too predictable, and critic Michael Medved of The Michael Medved Show suggests it’s full of “overwrought hammy vocal performances.” On the other hand, an overwhelming number of critics gush over the beautifully crafted music. A critic at CBC Radio notes that “this is a movie where every battle scene is presented like a music video.” Critics also agree that the animation is “dazzling” and “intense,” while at times “comical” and “light-hearted.” The addictive soundtrack captures each of the band members’ own struggles whilst having songs that just can’t be forgotten, like “Soda Pop.” The most notable song is “Golden,” reaching nearly 600 million streams on Spotify and hitting No. 1 on Billboard charts. Billboard announced that on September 14th, the soundtrack of KPop Demon Hunters itself hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart after 12 weeks climbing its way up. It also features original songs from K-pop sensation TWICE that further enticed fans of the genre to watch the movie. Interviews with the cast and online speculation suggest a sequel is in the works, but there is no confirmation.
