ASU Leaders: Katie and Ryan

 By Saylor Schuette

As the new school year started, Dana Hills ASU is already looking forward to football games, school dances, and new traditions. Senior ASU members Katie King and Ryan Shaffie are excited about what the year ahead holds and believe that this year has the potential to stand out. This year, Dana Hills ASU hopes to go beyond just planning events and also wants to create new traditions and bring more students into the community. Katie said she feels like ASU has “a great group” of people who can make this year different from other years at Dana Hills. Ryan described the senior class as “spirited, motivated, and very optimistic.” ASU is more than just planning dances and school events. For Katie and Ryan, it is also about being involved in the school and making students feel like they belong. Katie said one of her favorite things about ASU is being able to “be yourself in the work that you put in.” She enjoys being creative and having the opportunity to make changes around school while still being herself. Ryan said he enjoys the community that ASU creates and getting to work behind the scenes. From planning events to helping out with different activities, he said it is special to be able to do things for the student body. One of their biggest goals this year is making sure students feel like they have a voice. Shaffie stated that “ASU shouldn’t feel separate from the student body... It’s like we’re working together.” Along with the usual Dana Hills traditions, ASU is also hoping to create some new ones. Katie talked about wanting to bring new ideas to the school that could eventually become traditions for future Dolphins. One example is the upcoming light show, which she hopes can become something Dana Hills students look forward to for years to come.
