The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, and Brandon Sklenar was released into theaters on December 19th 2025. This is a thriller/horror based on the best selling novel The Housemaid, which was released in 2022 by Freida McFadden This movie follows Millie Calloway (Sweeney), Nina Winchester (Seyfried), and Andrew Winchester (Sklenar). Initially, it seems like a relatively normal movie, as Millie is hired as the housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family while she tries for a better life. They starts out as your average family, but soon more and more horrific secrets are revealed. What seems perfect at first, quickly turns into a terrifying nightmare. The movie quickly takes a heavy turn further progressing into something much darker as it goes on. There’s definitely some moments that feel shocking, while others feel a little cliche. There’s some mild blood/gore, but only mostly towards the end. The entire movie stays more true to its psychological aspect rather than scare factor. It leans into a mix of drama and thriller, as it’s filled with some over the top scenes and emotionally intense aspects. I would say that the overall “big plot twist” of the entire movie was just a little bit predictable, but it did a great job in the execution of it all. Although the beginning was quite slow, with nothing really happening until about an hour in, all of the characters development and storyline truly tied together well. This movie has gotten good reviews. I would say that I personally agree with the general consensus, and don’t really have any other outstanding negative details to point out. With a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is labeled as a “wildly entertaining thriller.” It was a hit in the movie theaters, making over $300 million globally, surpassing expectations. Most of the critics are giving positive reviews and it is highly recommended. It is a dramatic and suspenseful movie, leaving viewers wanting more. I wouldn’t personally say that this movie was scary in itself, though there are some heavy topics discussed. It is to be noted that the movie does stray from the original book, as all movie adaptations tend to do. Even if you’ve read the book, it would still be worth it to watch the movie, or vice versa. There were several significant changes throughout, though overall it was still a captivating movie to watch. I wouldn’t necessarily say this is “the best movie ever,” but it’s the perfect movie for lovers of mysteries, surprises, shocking twists, and psychological thrillers
