Seamstress Sunny Walder

 By Araceli Uribe

Junior Sunny Walder has been flourishing in her patchwork abilities. She sought after needles, threads, and fabric once “[her] grandmother taught [her to sew] in kindergarten.” Last year, Sunny Walder began her patchwork journey because she “wanted to fix her clothes up.” No one in particular had inspired Sunny, but the sort of craving she had inspired her enough to start. The tiring search for distinctive clothes, and her desire for unique clothes she could not find anywhere else. Sunny figured she could make designs catered to her liking since she knew how to sew. She finds her patchwork giving a “second life to things.” Her patchwork gives the clothing an inimitable personality. To make her patchwork pieces, Sunny usually thrifts the things as a base to sew with and she begins from there. With patchwork, she has the ability to revive clothing from middle school that she would previously not wear, turning her old clothing into some of her favorite staples. Her hard work can be shown when she wears her clothing as she has stitched and made her own shirt and jeans. Mrs. Kirtz, the Fashion Design teacher, has even let Sunny work on fabrics during her class. She not only does unique designs for herself but for other people as well. When she began her patchwork she did a pair of jeans for a friend at school. She even did a couple of pieces for some girls in Utah, and she shipped it out to them. She finds the spontaneity of it fun. Although she has not done patchwork for numerous people yet, she plans on getting her business running again, as she is “working on organizing stuff right now.” She hopes to have her business take off in the near future because of her passion for creating clothing. We’re excited to see Sunny’s business and designs continue to expand.
