Booming Business: Nails by Taryn

By Chloe Voke

Glitter, shine, and french tips, Taryn Medina does it all. Taryn began her business over the summer when her friend, Trinity Noll, asked her to do her nails. Though it took a bit of practice, in between visits to the beach and her job at In-n-Out, Taryn continued to improve and by word of mouth, she began to be seen and heard. Even though “it started out with a couple girls from the beach for free” people began to then pay her. A valuable part of the business for her is keeping her prices affordable. For those who don’t know, the average price for a full set of nails is around $100, Taryn charges around $45. She says she is not really in this business for the money but rather she likes to see that people get excited over them and love that “the designs everyone chooses are always so fun and so cool.” Because of her job, she cannot have her nails done so she enjoys doing other people’s nails. Another big part of her business is a belief in trying to use natural nails rather than acrylics which can destroy your natural nails. She primarily uses Gel X if your natural nails are not long enough which helps grow out nails and, from her studies and research, are much healthier than acrylics. Starting with a cheap Amazon starter kit and only a few colors she now has a full set up studio in her home where she sees clients. In the future she wants to get her license to do nails which would help refine technique and learn more designs, but for full time work she wants to go to flight school to be a pilot. She generally advertises through word of mouth. She began with her personal instagram, then created a business instagram, and now has a website. She wants to be the chill, home studio nail person that loyal customers can depend on. Her least favorite style of nails would have to be french tips because they take her so long. Her process is beginning to go much faster but she still makes sure not to rush. You can find her on instagram @nails_by_taryn_ with her booking website in the bio.
